GOVERNMENT FUNDED STUDY ABROAD OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS!!

Scholarships are now available for American students wishing to travel abroad and study languages that are critical to the nation, including Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Hindi, Korean, Russian, and Turkish. Students have the option of three different program lengths: a summer intensive, a semester, or a full academic year. Interested students must: (1) be U.S. citizens, (2) be 15-18 years of age at the start of the program, and (3) be enrolled in high school with at least a 2.5 grade point average. Students may travel abroad during high school or during a “gap year.” Applications must be submitted by February 2, 2009. FOR MORE INFORMATION, PLEASE GO TO:  www.nsliforyouth.org.

Q: What does the scholarship offer?
A: Full tuition in a study abroad program administered by AFS Intercultural Programs, American Councils, iEARN-USA, or another leading exchange
institution.

  • Pre-program language preparation
  • Pre-departure language and cultural orientation
  • In-country orientation and support
  • In-country language, culture, and current events classes with opportunities to apply acquired skills and knowledge
  • In-country field trips with local guides
  • Live in-country with a host family or boarding school
  • Re-entry orientation
  • Join the 550-member alumni association with outreach activities
  • Opportunities for continuing language study, mastery and use

Q: What costs are not covered by the scholarship?
A: Students will need to raise funds to pay for:

  • Passport costs
  • Spending money in the host country

Requirements:
To be considered for an NSLI for Youth program scholarship, you must:

  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Be 15-18 years of age at the start of the program
  • A minimum 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale is required
  • Be enrolled in high school at time of application – gap year study is an option
