This fall several Steller students created posters for the Lion’s Club Annual Peace Poster contest. Annually, over 350,000 students ages 11-13 participate in this contest around the world. The Steller participants created a variety of images based on their thoughts about peace. Images ranged from personal experiences of peace, how peace could be made throughout the world, to symbols of peace, such as peace as a small plant to be nurtured.
The Lion’s Club created the Peace Poster Contest 25 years ago to foster the spirit of peace and international understanding in young people worldwide.
Molly R’s poster was chosen to represent Steller Secondary School. Her poster was then selected as the state-wide winner, to represent Alaska in the national judging later this month in Washington, D.C.
Molly wrote about her entry:
“When some people think of peace, they think of no sadness, no anger or pain. To me, we still have all these feelings, we just don’t act on the more violent ones. When you’re little, you’re taught to talk things out rather than fight. Sometimes the most basic lessons can save a life of even a nation. All you have to do is start with a few little seeds of hope and compassion, diplomacy and faith. Faith – that with time things will get better. You just have to give it a nudge to help it get started.â€
Congratulations Molly!!
