Peace Poster Contest Winner: Molly R

This fall several Steller students created posters for the Lion’s Club Annual Peace Poster contest.  Annually, over 350,000 students ages 11-13 participate in this contest around the world. The Steller participants created a variety of images based on their thoughts about peace.  Images ranged from personal experiences of peace, how peace could be made throughout the world, to symbols of peace, such as peace as a small plant to be nurtured.

The Lion’s Club created the Peace Poster Contest 25 years ago to foster the spirit of peace and international understanding in young people worldwide.

Molly R’s poster was chosen to represent Steller Secondary School. Her poster was then selected as the state-wide winner, to represent Alaska in the national judging later this month in Washington, D.C.

Molly wrote about her entry:

“When some people think of peace, they think of no sadness, no anger or pain. To me, we still have all these feelings, we just don’t act on the more violent ones.  When you’re little, you’re taught to talk things out rather than fight. Sometimes the most basic lessons can save a life of even a nation. All you have to do is start with a few little seeds of hope and compassion, diplomacy and faith. Faith – that with time things will get better.  You just have to give it a nudge to help it get started.”

Congratulations Molly!!

Chaperones Needed!

Parents, want to be a star?  Now’s your chance!  Come chaperon the December dance: The Stars of the Red Carpet.  This dance is being sponsored by the 8th grade class so parents of 8th graders are especially encouraged to help out.  We need chaperons on Friday, December 7th.  Two shifts are available: 6:45-9:00 or 8:45-11:00.  Please email Ashley: vanhemert_ashley@asdk12.org if you would like to volunteer.  Thanks!

Entire Student Body Earns Food Handlers Card

All Steller Students who took the Food Worker Card Exam on November 12th received their card!  Steller parent, Janine Nesheim, in conjunction with several other parents, taught a food worker class to the entire student body.  Students then met in Advisory, and Steller parents proctored exams, graded them, and assisted any student who needed extra help.  I am so glad to work in a place that supports such opportunities for all our students.  Being able to accomplish this within a short amount of time took an awful lot of organization from our parent group, willingness to work with our school from the Municipality of Anchorage, and dedication from our awesome students.  We can’t thank you all enough! All cards will be handed out during the next Advisory period.

Congratulations Simon F!!

Congratulations to Steller’s Simon F. for being accepted into the bass section of the 2012 Alaska All State Orchestra. The orchestra is made up of top string students from all over Alaska. The All State Orchestra will perform with the All State Band and Choirs this Saturday, November 17, at 6p.m. in West High School’s auditorium. Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for adults.

Simon also received  a Superior “I” rating for his bass solo at last May’s State Solo and Small Ensemble Festival.
