Super Sweeper Family Event May 8!

The Grade Seven Social Club and Steller Parent Group is pleased to invite all Steller students, staff and families to the Steller Super Sweeper Clean Up Event!

Saturday, May 8 from 11:00am to 2:00pm at Steller School and surrounding area.

The Citywide Cleanup “Super Sweeper” Program  is a great way to teach kids the importance of keeping our community clean, and it’s also a lot of fun. Jointly coordinated by the Anchorage School District and the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce, the Super Sweeper Program challenges elementary, middle, and high schools to get together to clean trash around their school and in their neighbourhood.

  • Pick up your orange bags and map at Steller Secondary parking lot.
  • Win door prizes – a $50.00 gift certificate to Fred Meyer, and Steller Spirit Wear.
  • Light refreshments will be served (while supplies last).
  • Register here. It helps us plan how many people to expect if you register, but please feel free to drop by even if you haven’t registered.

We will be collecting the following to support Covenant House:

  • Gently used books, CDs etc to sell to Title Wave for credit.
  • NEW travel sized toiletries like shampoo and conditioner, toothbrushes and toothpaste, mouthwash, chapstick and deodorant.

Super Sweeper Family Event Flyer

National Honor Society Will be Selling Masks to support Bean’s Cafe.

Important Rules to Follow: Be Safe!

SPG will supply orange trash-bags, an area map, and juice boxes and cookies.

  • Wear a mask and practice social distancing to keep everyone safe.
  • Wear gloves (we will have a limited amount)  and an orange safety vest or bright coloured clothing.
  • Children must be under adult supervision at all times, everyone should use a buddy system.
  • Make good decisions to keep yourself safe. Be aware of the following risks:
    • The area may have needles, and other biohazards* (only adults should consider picking these up).
    • Sharp objects like glass and wire.
    • Steller is surrounded by busy streets, cross safely.
    • Keep in mind other risks associated with the midtown location.
  • Orange trash bags may not be used for household trash, yard clippings or hazardous waste such as a car battery, or household cleaners.
  • Dress appropriately. Sunscreen, rain gear, waterproof shoes and hats are recommended. Please be aware of private property boundaries and ask permission to clean in these areas.
  • Return orange bags back to Steller for pick up after no later than 1:30 pm.

*Adults may consider bringing a medical sharps container designed for needle collection, available at some pharmacies, or thick plastic jugs for detergent, kitty litter or shampoo (water bottles are too thin and can be punctured.)

If you have questions or want to volunteer to help organize please contact Kirsten at chairstellerparentgroup@gmail.com

Virtual Discussion for Teens: The Power of Connection

Last December Volunteers of America hosted a town hall event titled Wellbeing During Covid: Underage Alcohol Use and Prevention Strategies. We deemed the event a success after receiving positive feedback from the attendees and suggestions on what other types of virtual events would be beneficial to our community.

We’ve gathered some ideas regarding events needed for our community and are excited to announce that on April 28th, 2021 from 6:00pm – 7:30pm we will be hosting a virtual conversation titled Let’s Talk About It: The Power of Connection. This conversation will be teen focused and include teen led breakout groups focusing on healthy conversations regarding peer pressure, self-advocacy, and sober activities.

In preparation, we have collaborated with teen housing and treatment facilities such as the Covenant House Alaska, ARCH, and The Pathway Home to make this event accessible to teen clients in their care. Although this event is teen focused, we’d love for you to be in attendance or pass this information along to those who should be there (parents, teens, and community leaders).

To register for this event, visit voaak.org/letstalk and scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the registration box. ***Please note*** that any youth who pre-registers for the event will automatically be entered into a drawing to win a brand new IPAD!

SAVE THE DATE: Principal Candidate Webinar on Monday!

The final principal candidates will answer the same six questions during a candidate webinar on Monday, April 26 from 6 to 7pm. All community members are invited to listen to the Webinar and then provide feedback.

This is your opportunity to find out more about each candidate’s leadership style, and their perspective on the unique community that is Steller. It would be really great if we had a strong turn out of students, staff and parents/guardians for this important event.

Reminder: Steller Reflection Committee Monday, April 19.

Thank you to everyone who joined us Monday night for the Steller Reflection Committee Discussion. One thing that came through very clearly is how much we love our school and are willing to work to help it become even better.

On Monday, April 19 from 6:30 to 7:30 we will meet again next week to talk about:

  •  What we can do to help “onboard” new students into the Steller way, and help students and their families feel part of the community (with a particular focus on grade 7, 8 and 9).

  • Identify topics of interest we want to take up in the fall.

If you have ideas and questions you would like our community to consider taking up next year to help Steller grow and  become even better, or you just want to be part of the discussion, join us on Monday and help us brainstorm. Students and their families from all grades, and who are new, or have been here forever, are encouraged to join.

Topic: Steller Reflection Committee

Time: Monday, April 19, 6:30 pm

Principal Candidate Webinar – Save the Date!

As you know, after many years of service our principal Reed will be retiring at the end of this school year.  ASD is currently in the process of hiring someone to join our school. Because of the unique nature of Steller, students and parents are being given a voice in this process.

Tami will send out the link to the event closer to the date, but be sure to mark your calendars!

Steller Parent Group is excited to invite you to join the Grade Seven Social Club! The goal of the Social Club is to provide an opportunity for grade seven students to get to know each other and have some fun. Everyone in grade seven is invited to participate, but it is not mandatory.

How it works:

  1. We will post a new Creative Challenge and a Discussion Prompt every Monday on a platform called Padlet.
  2. You can post as much as you want, and respond to your friends, whenever you want. Padlet lets you post comments, photos, video and even links. The Challenges and Prompts are meant to be a bit silly, so get creative and have fun!
  3. We will also host Live Zoom sessions where we will play some games, have some breakout rooms, and get to know each other.

Participating is easy:

  1. Complete the Registration Form Here (both student and guardian).
  2. When you receive an email from Padlet scroll down and click on “Take Me to Padlet”. You don’t have to create an account!

Steller Information Night!

Dear Steller Families,

As you know, Steller is a unique and special school where students thrive as they are inspired to become  independent, confident, self-directed learners.

We would like to ask your help to spread the word about what a great school this is, and to encourage students to apply for the 2021-2022 school year via the ASD lottery system before the deadline on March 18.

Due to Covid restrictions we won’t be able to use our traditional ways of promoting Steller – the Ice Cream Social and school visits by our students.

We are excited to offer a fun and informational night via Zoom, led by students and staff.  Interested students and their parents/guardians can join us at 6:00pm on Wednesday, February 17 OR Thursday, February 18.

They can also learn more about the school by visiting the main ASD website and the Steller Parent Group website.

Please share the Steller Secondary Flyer widely!

Warm regards,

Kirsten Tschofen
