Tuesday, September 12  (6:00 to 7:30) – Steller Parent Group Meeting – Committee Sign Up, Budget Presentation

Important Message from Advocacy Group

Dear Steller Community –

An Ad Hoc Advocacy Committee  made up of Steller students and parents has formed over the last few weeks. This committee will submit/present a letter at the May 9th or May 23rd Anchorage School Board Meeting.

You are invited to come on Thursday 4/27, at 5pm to hear a short presentation from the Advocacy Committee. This committee’s intent is to develop a broad statement of support for our school philosophy and values , our students, teachers, and principal, and to ensure a diversity of perspectives at the ASD Board Meetings.

We will have an information table at the front entrance to the school where students and parents can ask questions and sign a letter to be submitted to the ASD Board should they like. The committee knows any statement will not cover all of the issues that may be important to you or state things the way you would personally, and we encourage you to attend, testify and/or submit your own comments to the school board.

BACKGROUND:

Steller has been named at recent school board meetings, and a blogger has mentioned Steller teachers and principal by name, in particular as it pertains to a Steller class about the history of banned books. Following the blog publication, Steller’s teachers and principal have received hate mail. As a result, Steller staff have been reviewing and enhancing classroom and building safety protocols. More details are available in the March Steller Parent Group meeting minutes under the Principal’s Report  here (or find the link under https://www.stellerschool712.org – Parents – SPG Minutes). .

You can review ASD School Board meeting minutes and videos here:. For your convenience, you can go directly to some of the above mentioned public comments here (or search YouTube for ASD School Board Meeting 2/21/2023)(starting around 58:00).

In addition to this issue, school funding challenges make this an important time to voice our support for Steller loudly and clearly.

We would love for our Steller community to come support our stellar Band and Orchestra students. Schedules to come soon.

We are expecting almost 200 students, and will need volunteers to help make this event a great success for everyone! Please check out the form here, and sign up!

Would you participate in a Silent Auction?

Dear Steller Students, Parents and Guardians,

Steller Parent Group is planning a fun community event on Sunday, April 23, 2023 at Bear Tooth Theatrepub. All members of the Steller Community are invited to attend the matinee showing of Addams Family Values. SPG will receive a portion of the ticket sales.

The Fundraising Committee is also considering hosting a small online auction of maybe 5-8 big ticket items and/or Advisory Baskets. This would be open to both members of our community, and the general public.

We would appreciate it if you could take a few minutes to complete our survey, to indicate your interest in donating a big ticket item, or donating for an Advisory Basket.

Big ticket items would be a minimum value of about $400. We are thinking of things like cabin stays and other tourism related activities, custom artwork, and more. Another popular idea would be to share a special skill – for example if you are a great cook you could offer to cook a dinner party for the first 8 people that bid the minimum (your house or theirs), or perhaps a cookie decorating party or similar. Think opportunities to get to know each other and build community. We’d be thrilled to work with you to work out details if you have a starting idea.

Advisory Baskets usually involve choosing a theme and collecting the items. We would need one student volunteer per advisory to put the basket together.

This information will help us decide if this is something our community wants to do, and helps us plan how best to spend our time as volunteers.

And, as always, if you would like to help, we’d love to have you!
