Steller Parent Group Meeting Tuesday 12 at 6:00

All parents/guardians, students and staff are automatically part of the Steller Parent Group and welcome to attend meetings, share ideas and vote on decisions.  This month in addition to regular updates from Reed, staff, and OpGroup we will be discussing the progress of the Student Nutrition Committee and a request for funding to support student recruitment for the 2021-2022 school year. We are still accepting funding requests as well.

You can find the Agenda and previous Meeting Minutes on under the “Parents” tab of the website, here.

We look forward to seeing you!

Steller Parent Group wishes the entire Steller Community – students, families, teachers and staff – a wonderful holiday.  We hope the next two weeks provide opportunities to rest, reset and enjoy yourselves, and are looking forward to a better 2021 for all of us.

We particularly want to thank Steller staff for the effort they have made this year to support our students and provide them with the best educational opportunities.

Warm regards,

Kirsten

Wanted: Yearbook Photos!

Hello steller families!

As finals week is coming close to an end so is the upcoming deadlines for Yearbook.

We are close to the 45% mark for portraits turned in! We would love to have 100% participation if possible from the Steller community. This means in the next 4 days we need 55% of the portraits turned in to reach our goals. Currently yearbook needs 170 portraits.  At the bottom of an email a guideline has been given to help take the portrait photos at home.

Yearbook is also in dire need of out-of-school activities photos, homemade mask photos, siblings, best friends (with stuffed animals), and transportation photos.

Please submit your photos before December 20th!

 If you have any questions about submissions please let us know.

The price of yearbooks will be going up soon as well, make sure to get those ordered here.

The price will go up January 1st to $50 a book.

After the break, we will be looking for student art photos, home study area photos,  and many more. If you already have photos that fit these categories feel free to send them in early!

We wish all Steller community members a healthy and happy winter break.

Yearbook committee

A note from SPG : The yearbook committee consists of a handful of staff and students  (who are volunteering their time).  Many ASD schools aren’t going to have a yearbook at all, so we at Steller are so lucky that people have stepped up to do this for us!  The volunteers still have many steps to do to properly record each photo into the yearbook software after they receive them. So waiting until the last minute means more work for them during the holidays. Let’s help them out!

Please email your photos to yearbookstellersecondary@gmail.com or opgsml@gmail.com with your name, grade, advisory and theme your photo is for.

#StellerGives: Sentha W.

The Anchorage #BLM March was intended to commemorate the March on Washington by Martin Luther King along with many others around the country. Unfortunately, covid created permitting issues and the march took place a little later in the month.

The organizers of the march reached out to local teens to speak about how the events going on around the country had affected them. We are a member of the Jack & Jill of America organization and they presented the opportunity to our teens. Jack & Jill is involved in community service all over the nation and they encouraged the teens to speak out and speak up for what they believe in.

The march organizers wanted the teens to write about their experience and perspectives. They created a space for a few local teens to speak to their community about how the racial injustices happening were impacting them. Sentha wrote a speech and shared it with the crowd. There were about three other teens and one elementary schooler who spoke. They all spoke of their pain and how they believe that we should see each other as fellow human beings. It was powerful to have the young people encourage the crowd to love and discourage the racial injustices happening. Sadly, not everyone came out of love and Sentha was heckled while giving her speech. The crowd began chanting to drown out the negative words and raised their first in solidarity with her. It was a powerful moment.  That is when the photo was taken.

Thank you Sentha for speaking up for what you believe and being a leader in our community.

Winner of Free Yearbook!

Hey Steller, just a reminder that Yearbook still needs photo submissions!

Congratulations to Ravyn C. in 9th grade for submitting a portrait by December 9th.  You won the draw, and will receive a FREE YEARBOOK. Contact yearbookstellersecondary@gmail.com to make sure you receive your book.

We have about 1/3rd of the staff and student portraits needed for this year’s yearbook. Please submit ASAP to yearbookstellersecondary@gmail.com

Yearbook also still needs
* Portraits!¡!
* Sibling photos
* Out of school activities
* Best friends with your favorite stuffed animal friends
* Transportation photos

Yearbook greatly appreciates all the hard work that Steller’s community has already put into the yearbook, but please help us make it complete by including every student possible.

Thanks, Alana P Yearbook Director

Quyanas to our Staff!

ASD is currently running a unique way to recognize staff for their efforts to support our children in their learning.  The website describes it this way:

Quyana (ku-‘ya-na) a Central Yup’ ik word for thank you, is also the name of our site-based award of appreciation. You can give this award to any employee or volunteer in recognition of achievement, service or dedication.

Thank you to the students and parents that have taken the time to write a few words for our staff.  To see what others have written visit the site here.

If you would like to say your own thank you please go to this link and write your Quyana.

Warm regards,

Congratulations Xavier!

Congratulations, Xavier!
Steller Band student, Xavier L on bassoon, has been selected to participate in the 2020 Alaska School Activities Association (ASAA) All-State Band.  Acceptance to the All-State Band is among highest honors that high school band students in Alaska may achieve.  He even earned the first chair in the bassoon section.
“Xavier has been practicing regularly and very wisely, despite the fact that band does not have actual ensemble rehearsals, due to the COVID-19,” said Mr. Toba.  “I am super proud of his accomplishment.  The Steller Community has been long waiting for this wonderful news to arrive.”
The All-State Band will not have in-person events this year, but Xavier will still receive the certificate of achievement from the ASAA.
Nobuo Toba
Band Teacher

Congratulations from all of us at Steller! Well done.
