AVTEC, Alaska’s Institute of Technology

AVTEC is Alaska’s preferred technical training center, recognized for its student – centered environment and training excellence.  Through creative and collaborative relationships with outside resources and entities, AVTEC is the state’s most responsive leader in strengthening business and industry by building the highest quality workforce.  AVTEC is a model for best practices in teaching and learning in postsecondary education and vocational training in Alaska.

AVTEC is a postsecondary vocational and technical training center located in Seward Alaska (with a small ancillary program in Anchorage to accommodate the Health Services programs).  In partnership with the State of Alaska Department of Labor the mission of AVTEC is to train a diverse and effective workforce that supports the economic growth and stability of Alaska.

Over the last 40 years, AVTEC campus facilities have expanded to encompass three distinct areas within the City of Seward.  In recent years, AVTEC has acquired more buildings and land to meet the employment and training needs of Alaska’s business and industrial community.  The facilities, classes, training, and activities within each campus area are distinct as well.

The Seward Campus is at the western end of central Seward, the First Lake Campus ahs three buildings located on it.  The first Lake Facility is 32,142 sq feet and houses AVTEC’s Administrative Offices, Admissions and Financial Aid, Academic and financial Aid counselors, the Business and Technology Program, Informational Technology Program, general academic classes provided by Learning Resource Department, and the Alaska Maritime Training Center.  The Building Trades and Related Studies building is 6,720 sq feet and houses the Facility Maintenance / constriction Trades and Related Studies program(s).  The Connected Education Center houses the distance delivery classrooms, broadcast rooms, and offices.

In the midst of downtown Seward, the Student Life Campus encompasses dormitory and apartment housing for AVTEC students; just down the street you will find The Alaska Culinary Academy and Cafeteria, community services and classes for Adult Basic Education, GED and other Learning Resource programs, library, library computer lab and the Student Service Center.

At the northern industrial end of town, the Applied Technologies Campus consists of three buildings.  There you will find the 30,278 sq foot building that holds shop and classrooms for AVTECS Automotive Technology, Diesel and Heavy Equipment Technologies, and Welding.  The second building, 9,058 sq. ft. holds shop and classrooms for the Industrial Electricity Program.  The third building, 7,200 sq. ft. and hosts the Plumbing & Heating Program, Qualified Member of  the Engine Department Oiler program and Power Plant.

Across Resurrection Bay, the Maritime Safely Training Campus is located in the Seward Marine Industrial complex.  This campus is a 4,00 sq. ft. facility and is part of the Alaska Maritime Training Center that includes a training lifeboat and davit system, a ship fire fighting simulator and additional classroom space.
