Personal Safety Lesson on November 20

Dear Parent(s),

Steller Secondary School will be teaching Semester 1 Personal Safety lesson on November 20th in a grade level  setting.   The age-appropriate lesson will be presented in a non-threatening way, along with the skills needed for self-protection. The lesson content is part of the Anchorage School District’s plan to enact the Alaska Safe Children’s Act and will be handled in a sensitive, respectful manner.

If you have any questions about the content of the program or if you wish to inquire about opting out, please contact your child’s advisor or the school office.

The Alaska Safe Children’s Act (also known as Erin’s and Bree’s Law) goes into effect June 30, 2017.

 

AS 14.30.355 (Erin’s Law) requires that the governing body of each school district to adopt and implement a policy, establish a training program for employees and students, and provide parental notices relating to sexual abuse and sexual assault awareness and prevention for students enrolled in grades kindergarten through twelve.

 

AS 14.30.356 (Bree’s Law) requires that the governing body of each school district shall adopt and implement a policy, establish a training program for employees and students, and provide parental notices relating to dating violence and abuse in grades seven through twelve. A training program adopted under this section must emphasize prevention and awareness.

Please see below the information about a very cool opportunity for high school and college students age 16 and older who have an interest in Veterinary Science; Natural Resources and Biological Sciences; Engineering and Architecture; Business, Contracting, Procurement, and Industry; General Administration and Office Support; Financial Management; and Information Technology. USDA is recruiting students for paid summer internships at USDA offices around the country.  Additional information is available at the links below.

Students need only click on https://www.usda.gov/internships to find the field in which they are interested, click on the “Apply” button beneath that field to learn more and, if they want to pursue the opportunity, click on the “Apply” button within that field to create an account at USAJOBS.gov.

Please feel free to forward this information to those you think may be interested.  Applications are being accepted until 11:59 p.m. (EST) on November 15, 2019 for internships this summer.

Reed College – Junior Day

Junior Day Visit at Reed College

Reed has created a unique event designed for juniors. Our experienced counselors will give them the inside scoop on the admission process. As a result, students will feel equipped and encouraged to forge their own personal path through the college search process.

This event takes place on our campus on Saturday, November 23—please tell your juniors.

During Junior Visit Day, students will:

  • discover how to navigate the selective admission process;

  • learn to share their story in a college essay writing workshop;

  • get to the bottom of widely held myths about financial aid.

We look forward to welcoming your students to Reed—a college dedicated to the life of the mind.

Yearbooks: Everything You Need to Know!

Cover Contest- Steller students remember the deadline for the cover contest is Nov. 3rd. All submissions must be sent in before 12 am Sunday the 3rd. Please make your art on a normal size piece of paper. The winner will get a free yearbook. Please contact Bonnie with any questions.

Out of School Activities – Please send your out of school activities photos in for our out of school activities page. These photos could include sports, outdoor activities, and much more. Please also include a description of what you are doing.

Pets page– Yearbook also needs photos of you and your pets for the yearbook.

Band and Orchestra– Band and orchestra students please send photos from both classes. Yearbook needs them for the band and orchestra pages.

Seniors Portraits pages– Seniors, please remember portraits and pages are due February 1st. Yearbook recommends sending them in sooner rather than later in case any issues may occur.

The Ol’ Steller Yeller

Steller is bringing back our monthly newsletter, The Ol’ Steller Yeller.  In it you can find updates and stories from students and teachers about the wonderful learning, projects, and events happening at Steller.  If you would like a hardcopy, there are some in the office.  Look for upcoming editions on the first Friday of each month.  Comments, questions, or story ideas about the publication, please contact Ashley at vanhemert_ashley@asdk12.org

A Few Lucky Families!!

We have an exciting opportunity for the Anchorage (hopefully Steller) community.  We have high school students all the way from Recife, Brazil who have been awarded a government scholarship to attend one semester of high school.  They will be here from January for just 5 months and we are looking for host families to welcome these students into their homes for this short-term stay.  Would you mind sharing this with your students and families?  In return, CIEE would like to thank your classroom with $250 for referring a family that ends up hosting!

They speak good English, have their own medical insurance, and their scholarship covers the cost of their personal expenses.  They will attend the high school closest to their host family so they can take school transportation.  A family simply welcomes them as one of their own.  This is a great way to learn about a new culture, enjoy showing these students around the community, and learn a little bit of Portuguese.

A host family can be a family with our without kids of any age, single adult, retired, etc.  Anyone who is willing to open their home to these great students make wonderful host families.

Here are notes from some of our students:

DANYLLO, 16 year old boy – Hey, I’m Danyllo, and I’m from Brazil. I don’t know how to play soccer or to dance samba, but I can cook brigadeiro for you! I like to talk about everything, to get out of home and see incredible places, to play cards, board games, I like cooking, I love pets and children. I am funny, happy, a smart guy. During my exchange, I want to learn about the USA and, of course, have the best experience of my whole life, we could share it all!

CAIO RAFAEL, 16 year old boy – I am a very quiet person, but if you try to talk to me you certainly notice that I’m very talkative, I just don’t usually start the conversation. I’ve liked music since I was little, because of that I learned how to play the electric guitar and the acoustic guitar I also now some musical theory. People say I’m funny. I’m an only child and I’ve never had a pet, mainly because I’ve lived the most of my life in apartments. I like videos games, I have a PC so I play my games there and my favorite type of games are the competitive ones like CS: GO, Rainbow Six, Fortnite, etc.  I like exercising too, I do things like working out and running, it’s the complete
opposite of playing video games but I like them both.

DEYSIANE, 16 year old girl- My name is Deysiane. I love to smile and see the people around me smiling too, I don’t like to see anyone sad. People say that I am very sweet, affectionate, intelligent, smiling and friendly. When I get to know people, I’m a little shy at first, but then I start mingling with them. I enjoy spending my free time reading, studying, listening to music, cooking and hanging out with my family and friends. My family takes me to know new places and learn new things.  I like children very much, I get along very well with them. I like to play with the kids in my neighborhood, they are very cute.

DAVI, 16 year old boy – I have facility to make new friends. They always say I am a calm person and I think this is a good point. I love to be with them and to play soccer, which is my favorite sport. I also enjoy traveling with my family. My favorite game is dominos and I usually play it at school.

Drug take back – Saturday, Oct. 26

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is Saturday, Oct. 26 and the Anchorage Fire Department (AFD) says it’s a great event to dispose of unused medication promptly and safely to keep our kids safe. AFD says disposing of unused medication will help protect children from accidental poisoning, and prevents theft by visitors, relatives, or strangers.The event Oct. 26 starts at 10:00 A.M. and ends at 2:00 P.M.

AFD says in Alaska, April’s drug take-back event saw 4,567 pounds of prescription medications disposed of at 19 sites across the state, and a total of 937,443 pounds of prescription medications was disposed of nationally.
