Tuna Recall–Check Your Pantry!

There have been two recalls on canned tuna fish this week to bring to your attention. Please check your pantry shelves to look out for the affected tuna. Details about the recall are below, and pictures of the product are attached. Recalled Tuna Images

RECALL: Bumble Bee Chunk Light Tuna

A nationwide voluntary recall has been issued for Bumble Bee Chunk Light Tuna with the following UPC codes/”Best By” Dates. No illnesses have currently been reported. The specific product may have been under processed, which could cause the cans not to be sterilized. This increases the likelihood if food is contaminated by spoilage organisms or pathogens, and that the tuna could cause illness if consumed.

RECALL: Chicken of the Sea Chunk Light Tuna

A nationwide voluntary recall has been issued for Chicken of the Sea Chunk Light Tuna with the following UPC codes/”Best By” Dates. Anchorage Youth Court Opportunity

imageAnchorage Youth Court (AYC) has a new member class starting Saturday, April 2. This is a great volunteer opportunity for students in the Municipality of Anchorage in grades 7 – 12 between the ages of 12-18.

Youth interested in AYC must take the class before they begin volunteering. In this class students will learn about the court system and how to prepare to handle AYC court cases. After they take the class and become a new member, they can volunteer their time in trainings, adjudicating cases for their peers, and other volunteer opportunities throughout the community.

The class begins on Saturday, April 2 at West High School. The class meets for three consecutive Saturdays from 10 am – 2 pm and then meets on April 23 for the bar exam from 12 – 1pm.

Registration Deadline: Wednesday, March 30 at 6 pm. For more information and to register, please visit www.anchorageyouthcourt.org.

Welcome our Akiak Exchange Students!

imageHello Steller!
Our Sister School Exchange Students from Akiak, Alaska are here! Akiak is a village on the Western coast of Alaska that is about 20 minutes north of Bethel. They arrived on Sunday, March 20th and will be spending the week with us here at Steller! They are here to experience life at Steller and gain a better understanding of life outside of rural Alaska. Please make them feel welcome by saying hello and introducing yourself!

Thank you so much!

Information for students and parents in Spanish classes

The STAMP test is here! Students in Spanish classes will be assessed using the STAMP assessment to determine their language level based on national proficiency levels. These assessments will take place the weeks of March 21-April 1 during students’ regular Spanish classes. This is a great opportunity to see how well students can use the language they are learning. Please read the attached letter HERE from the director of World Languages, Brandon Locke, to learn more. If you have any questions, please contact Ashley or Rosa.

Essential Questions Submissions Requested

Next year, the Steller staff is going to pilot using schoolwide essential questions and we’re inviting everyone to submit a question for consideration. Essential questions are “big idea” questions that do not have simple right or wrong answers. Our goals are to encourage critical thinking on a similar topic throughout our community and to spark collaborative conversations among students, parents, and staff. Throughout each semester, students will explore the questions in their advisory groups, and, because the question will be interdisciplinary, teachers will be able to incorporate it into their lesson plans. The semester’s exploration may culminate with seminar-style discussions as part of our All Community Meeting. We will explore one question per semester and plan to have them chosen this school year. Question suggestions can be put in the essential question box in the office, or you can email them to Danielle at Sjoden_Danielle@asdk12.org. Please submit them by Friday, April 1st. For question criteria and the rationale for using essential questions, see the article about the school we’re modeling this after: http://www.jcsd.k12.or.us/sites/jcsd.k12.or.us/files/files/using%20schoolwide%20essential%20questions%20to%20drive%20learning.pdf Thanks in advance for your support.

Steller band students played well at District Solo/Ensemble Festival

Six Steller band students participated at the District Solo/Ensemble Festival on February 26, 2016, at UAA. Isabelle L. on flute played Cantabile et Presto by George Enesco; Tatiana R. on flute played Allegro by Leonard Vinci; and Erica S. on trumpet Azim R., Kohlby V. on trombone, and Sam R. on tuba formed a brass quartet and played An Elizabethan Madrigal. Bella earned “I (superior)” rating. Tatiana and the brass quartet each received “II (excellent)” rating. “This is the first time in many years that so many Steller band students entered the high school solo/ensemble festival”, said Mr. Toba. “All of the students played well under such pressure. I am very proud of them, and I would like to congratulate Bella for advancing to state.” The State Solo/Ensemble Festival will be May 6 and 7 at UAA.

Steller Student Directory

Earlier this week, an email was distributed to the Steller Community with a link to the 2015-2016 STELLER STUDENT DIRECTORY. Due to the way in which the ASD mail system processes web links, you may have to manually copy and paste the web link address into a web browser in order to access the file. This file is intended only for members of our school community and will not be publicly posted on the school website or elsewhere.

Please note that a directory listing is included only for students and/or parents who have entered their information and have given explicit consent to this information being released in the 2015-2016 Steller Directory. If your information is not included and you wish for it to be included in any subsequent Steller Directory printings during the current school year, please use the following link to add your information: Steller Student Directory & Parent Contact Information (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/18DtNdykA_xNjGRa4gCYPHRKeWoHMktJR4eBk8TToUGM/viewform).
