March is National Nutrition Month – 9 Steps to a Great Lunch

  1. Clean hands! Wash your hands before preparing food and eating it.
  2. Choose fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are packed with vitamins and fiber. It’s a good idea to eat five servings of fruits and vegetables every day. A serving of carrots would be just 10 sticks. A fruit serving could be one medium orange or a box of 100% fruit juice.
  3. Know the facts about fat. Kids need some fat in their diets to stay healthy, but you don’t want to eat too much of it. Fat is found in butter, oils, cheese, nuts, and meats. Some higher-fat lunch foods include French fries, hot dogs, cheeseburgers, macaroni and cheese, and chicken nuggets. Don’t worry if you like these foods! No food is bad, but you may want to eat them less often and in smaller portions. Some of the best low-fat foods are fruits, vegetables, and skim or low-fat milk.
  4. Let whole grains reign. “Grains” include breads, cereals, rice, and pasta. What’s the difference between whole grains and refined grains? Whole grains have more nutritional value, including fiber that can help prevent obesity. Brown rice and whole wheat bread are whole grains. White rice and 100% white bread are not.
  5. Slurp sensibly. It’s not just about what you eat – drinks count, too! Milk has been a favorite lunchtime drink for a long time. If you don’t like milk, choose water or 100% juice (be sure to count it as a fruit serving!) Avoid juice drinks and sodas – they have LOTS of sugar, and less nutritional value.
  6. Balance your lunch. Pack a lunch that includes a mix of food groups: some grains, some fruits, some vegetables, some meat or protein foods, and some dairy foods such as milk and cheese.
  7. Steer clear of packaged snacks. Many packaged chips and cookies are very high in fat and salt or sugar. Try some lower fat/sugar/salt snacks such as pretzels, raisins, or homemade trail mix.
  8. Mix it up. Eating lots of different kinds of food gives your body a variety of nutrients.
  9. Use Manners. Chew with mouth closed. Don’t talk and eat at the same time to prevent spitting your food or choking. Use utensils. Put a napkin on your lap. Be polite. And don’t make fun of what someone else is eating.

Kitchen cleaning – please help

The Steller kitchen will undergo it’s 2nd health inspection of the year, this or next week.

TOB cleaned before the 1st inspection and earned a 100%  – woo-woo!

In preparation for this inspection, TOB has cleaned all the areas and equipment they use but has NOT cleaned areas and equipment they do not use.

If you have used the kitchen–even once–since the start of the year, please make time to come in and clean/put away any non-TOB areas – including the first fridge, ovens and dish drying racks.

Thanks!

UAA Workshop for students # March 6th – 8th

This Spring we are hosting the Young Americans for a three day workshop at UAA in the Fine Arts Building, March 6-8.
Young Americans Alaska Premiere Tour @UAA www.youngamericans.org/alaska

The Young Americans has been around since the 60s and this is the first time they are coming to Alaska. We are thrilled to have Anchorage be the Alaska debut for Young Americans.

  *   This high energy workshop covers vocal techniques, dance, comedy improvisation, stage movement, sound, lighting and other elements of performance.
  *   The workshop invites grades 3-12 and divides them into appropriate age groups.
  *   The students choose their teacher for the workshop.
  *   Young Americans bring @40 teachers to the workshop so the individual attention to participants is strong.
  *   This workshop is a great way to bring a radius of schools together to participate in a workshop event.
  *   Young Americans is known for helping youths discover themselves through the power of music and performance.
  *   The Young Americans represent 35 states and travel 20 countries across the world. Our Anchorage students will be able to interact with international performers and cultivate a unique cultural exchange.
  *   The workshop is structured to inspire teamwork, self-confidence, leadership and growth within the performing arts.

I personally love this group because:

  *   I know students who have been bullied, participated in this workshop and the experience and performance built up their self esteem. They some times end up with a pen pal for life.
  *   The workshop is not only geared for the bright and shining stars at the schools but also for that student who needs a self confidence boost.
  *   I have been asked by local teachers to find opportunities to have students on the UAA college campus. This workshop allows the students to enjoy workshops in the Fine Arts Building.
  *   There is a fee for the workshop, but Young Americans are backed by the Country Music Awards and able to offer financial assistance for those who need it. Plus, we have secured local sponsors.
