Attention all Seniors and Parents

For any student who would like to wear a gown for graduation, Jostens of Anchorage at 223-6002 is a great option.  Just advise them that you are from Steller Secondary and they will fix you up with a gown of your choosing.

Some students of the Senior class have opted to purchase caps through another vender.  That order is still going through and if you have not made your order and would like to purchase just a cap, please contact the office and we will forward the information to the proper contact.

The wearing of the traditional cap and gown is only an option.  Steller graduates are welcome to choose whether or not to wear them.

Sophomore Day permission slips are due today April 11. Please give to Nurse Annette

STELLER SOPHOMORE DAY
Friday, April 14, 2017 8:30 AM – 2:05 PM
King Career Center

Each year Steller conducts an educational program for the sophomore class. The emphasis is on pertinent life issues affecting youth. This is a full day workshop that features guest speakers from the community. The purpose of this event is to present students with current and accurate information.
This year, our day includes many prevention-based presentations:

  • Substance Abuse and Electronic Use – Tad Sumner, Psychology Resources
  • Suicide Awareness – Sonya Davis, MOA DHHS
  • ID Theft & Social Media Scams – Michelle Tabler, Better Business Bureau

Parent permission is required to attend this workshop; there are two separate consent forms: Consent Forms Sophomore Day.pdf

Our goal is to have every Steller sophomore attend this important event. Students can find anything on the Internet these days, but not everything is factual. The importance of reinforcing information related to these adolescent issues couldn’t be overemphasized and teens need to be provided with the facts to help them make wise decisions.

Students will be excused from classes if they attend the full-day workshop. However, students without permission must attend regularly scheduled classes.

Make Your Voice Heard on Education

The Alaska legislature is working hard to resolve the state’s fiscal crisis. There are no easy answers, but the $69M cut to base education funding currently introduced as part of the Senate’s operating bill is of concern for our public school community. This 5% cut is on top of the already planned loss of 120 Anchorage School District positions, which was based on flat funding.

What does this mean at Steller? Less educational offerings for our students.

What can you do about it? Make your voice heard. The most effective route would be writing to all of the state’s legislators. Here is a link: https://akleg.gov/docs/pdf/whoswho.pdf.
