Join the Band!

Join us for fun with playing the band instruments. Steller Band is always looking for students who have at least one year of playing experience in band (i.e. 6th grade beginning band). For 7th and 8th graders, we will expect you to play the instruments you played last year; for 9th graders through 12th graders, you will have an opportunity to try new band instruments. No instrument? We will work with you!

Contact Mr. Toba at toba_nobuo@asdk12.org

We participated in the Aurora Music Festival.  It is a 3 day event for small school music students in Alaska.  We went to Valdez to attend the festival last year.  It was a very successful trip.
Steller Band DOES qualify you to enter the All-State band and state solo/ensemble festivals if you are in 9th grade and up, and the Junior Youth Symphony Band and Orchestra and the middle school solo/ensemble festival for 7th and 8th graders. Our first meet will be Thursday (8/24) in the 2nd portable. We hope to see you then!

Solar Eclipse on Monday, August 21

Welcome back to the start of another school year. This is an important message as a reminder that eye protection is absolutely essential to protect all eyes that plan to look at the upcoming eclipse on Monday, August 21, 2017, even if it’s just a partial.

We Alaskans may miss the total solar eclipse as it crosses over the Lower 48, but not all is lost. A partial eclipse will still be visible across the state.  Just how much of the eclipse Alaska will be able see depends on your location and, of course, the weather.

In Anchorage, about 45 percent of the sun will be eclipsed by the moon at its maximum point. The eclipse will start at 8:21 a.m., be at maximum at 9:16 a.m. and end at 10:13 a.m, according to Travis Rector, astronomer at the University of Alaska Anchorage.

Protect your eyes!
Never look directly at the sun during a solar eclipse. Looking directly at the sun can cause permanent damage to your eyes. After viewing a solar eclipse, if you or your child have any changes in vision or eye pain that continues to get worse seek treatment from an eye care professional.

Thank you and look forward to seeing everyone again soon.

Just a reminder to all those who have yet to register your child/children for school through ASD Online Registration.  The first day of school is quickly approaching and there are still a large number of you who have yet to register your kiddos.  Please take the time to take care of this quickly.

Ride-sharing / Carpooling

We’ve already been getting requests for families who need support in this area and with this FLASH post I’m reaching out to ask folks in the Chugiak area to consider helping a family out with ride-sharing for the upcoming year.
If you are in this area and would like to share the responsibility of driving to/from Steller please call Linda at (907)227-0042.

If you are in need of driving assistance or if you’re willing to help others in the Steller community, please email me (karenlgillis@me.com) and let me know your name, phone number, area of town and any specifics that will help to coordinate this need.

There are lots of advantages to pooling our driving resources and I know as much as anyone the importance of having someone as a back-up.

Let’s be that community of people who are willing to reduce our carbon footprint and help one another out in the process!
